I had an opportunity to participate in the 2024 Gartner Data & Analytics Summit in Orlando. This year’s event had something for everyone, with plenty to choose from. Their six tracks focused on D&A leadership, business value, analytics, AI, data management, and governance. I look forward to such events to learn and engage with various customers, analysts, speakers, exhibitors, and industry peers. Here are ten learnings that stuck with me from the conference mixed with my own reflections:

1. D&A Leaders must work with their CEOs to establish & execute their AI Ambition.

AI is fast becoming a general-purpose technology, much like the Internet. Companies that integrate AI into their redesigned business workflows are more likely to win in the long term than companies that use AI for incremental improvements. According to Gartner, public companies that strategically use AI outperformed their peers 80% of the time over the past nine years. Yet, 90% of leadership is not AI-ready.

D&A leaders must collaborate and collectively define their company’s AI ambition—is it a business driver or a business enabler? Then, work on the foundational pillars, which include skillset, toolset, mindset, dataset, and trustset. A successful practitioner states that success is 97% execution and 3% strategy. Think big, start small, and scale quickly!

2. Executive Leadership will be tested when prioritizing AI innovation alongside new regulatory mandates against AI harms.

Companies operating in multiple countries face regulations based on diverse principles reflecting local political norms and cultural differences. The US favors a light-touch regulatory approach to foster AI innovation, the EU emphasizes stringent risk-based regulations for AI, and China favors a proactive approach to addressing AI risk within specific topics such as algorithms and deep synthesis over time.

Executives must lead with a dual focus: embracing the transformative power of AI while also championing the safeguards that keep its development in check. Recommendations to leaders include adding AI-related questions to third-party due diligence, monitoring regulations, assessing risks, and tracking unauthorized and prohibited uses.

3. The confluence of AI & BI will require D&A leaders to reimagine why they do what they do for business.

The bake-off between Microsoft Power BI, Oracle Analytics Cloud, and Tableau was very interesting. It was useful to see scripted demos from their experts on data management, analysis, content creation and collaboration, sharing, and emerging innovations. Microsoft showcased co-pilot for (almost) everything, Oracle impressed with ambient analytics, and Tableau envisioned a spatial canvas for visuals.

AI’s automation power can be used to develop point solutions that produce the same output but faster through improved developer productivity, as showcased by Microsoft. Or it can fundamentally transform how analytics are delivered for business use, as showcased by Oracle. Does your business need the same old mousetrap, just built faster, or a better mousetrap?

4. McDonald’s Way: Starting with technology to govern enterprise data & AI doesn’t work at scale.

Zachary Richard, who heads McDonald’s Global Data Science team, shared an insightful case study on how they went about successfully building an enterprise data & AI modeling governance platform after two failed attempts in the past five years. The platform, powered by Collibra, provides better discoverability, easier collaboration and reduces risk while improving horizontal ways of working with trustworthy data.

The critical success factors included spending time talking to market leads to build a business context for the program, building a business-led story on the business value of the platform, strong partnership between business & IT leadership, and taking a “front back” approach to technology selection. They are using a hub-and-spoke model to integrate market systems with the enterprise platform.

5. The Generative AI wave is driving (meaningful) innovation in product companies with niche core capabilities to support RAG-based use cases.

Retrieval-Augmented Generation technique combines a pre-trained LLM with a retrieval system to provide the LLM with access to contextual and trustworthy data for more relevant responses. It is favored over fine-tuning, which takes more time and money, and is especially not good when enterprise facts change frequently. Implementing RAG at an enterprise scale is not easy when one custom codes apps.

It requires organizing enterprise facts for effective retrieval using either a vector database (for similarity) or a document hierarchy (for relatedness). This is done through chunking and embedding data when storing and vice versa when retrieving. Tools such as Nexla (RAG pipelines & orchestration), Aible (serverless full-stack apps), and Neo4j (knowledge graph) are making it easier to build Gen AI apps.

6. Companies are (finally) prioritizing enterprise data quality practices.

The ability of a business to generate and scale ANY value from AI depends on how well it takes advantage of its data. Access to large quantities of high-quality data is a prerequisite and a top barrier to the adoption of AI. While everyone wants to do the glamorous work of showcasing AI models, only some want to do the hard work of engineering quality into their data.

I had several conversations with leaders from large enterprises who were in the market to explore comprehensive data quality management solutions. This is a good sign. Tools such as DQLabs and Monte Carlo support proactive quality management practices with multiple interventions – both human & automated – into the data lifecycle from source to enrichment to consumption.

7. Study working practices & lessons learned from companies that accelerated Gen AI results.

Two real-world case studies on the successful use of Gen AI caught my attention:

  1. Scott Richardson, CIO at Ally shared how they achieved real business results, with velocity to market being their primary driver, and
  2. Darrel Cherry, Chief Architect at Clearwater Analytics, shared how they delivered CWIC to provide digital specialists to their clients to transform client interaction with accounting data.

When the industry’s overall maturity is low, it helps to learn from others. Ally incrementally built an enterprise platform with loosely coupled components and established an AI factory model for delivery. Clearwater articulated a similar architecture but with more granular security controls. A focus on MVP, engineering culture, quality data, responsible AI, and change management was crucial in their success.

8. Deploying AI at scale requires mastery of ModelOps, DataOps, and DevOps.

Delivering value from Gen AI requires deployment at scale. The non-deterministic nature and black-box characteristics of predictive results creates multiple challenges – from lack of transparency and consistency to higher and more skillful resource requirements for operations and model management. No wonder most (>54%) projects fail, never go into production, or take forever.

Data engineering has roots in software engineering, and both have evolved into distinct disciplines with different focus. Now, AI engineering is fast evolving. Digital teams would need skills from each discipline to solve problems. DevOps would enable software agility, DataOps would enable dealing with data variability, and ModelOps would be essential for model consistency.

9. Should you worry about making the right decision or making your decision right?

Building modern enterprise AI applications requires a leader to make several choices. Examples include selecting an LLM, provisioning infrastructure, choosing from literally 100s of tools, build or borrow talent, prioritizing use cases, and many more. The paradox of choice leads to stress, difficulty in making decisions, and a higher chance of regret.

I wonder if leaders are spending more time worrying about making the right decision than focusing on execution as demonstrated at Ally Financial. When things are evolving quickly, you must have the ability to change the underlying technology without impacting your business workflows.

10. As we make AI smarter, we must invest in how we remain smarter.

Lastly, two keynotes from guest speakers intrigued me.

Rahaf Harfoush, a Digital Anthropologist, focuses on the intersection of emerging technology, innovation, and digital culture. She observes that as Gen AI becomes pervasive, humans risk losing the mastery of thinking, which is (very) dangerous. We are at the cusp of redefining the value of human creative labor. To counter that, we must build intentional systems of expertise to achieve our goals collectively with human and AI intelligence.

David Kwong, a Magician and NY Times Crossword Puzzle Constructor, gave a spellbinding talk on creating order out of chaos. He exhibited several tricks that made them look ridiculously easy, much like how AI generates content with ease. He quoted Teller: “Sometimes magic is just someone spending more time on something than anyone else might reasonably expect,” which alludes to the hard work that goes into making things appear simple! But according to David, the real magic is in the data that is behind the scenes.

The question is how much work are we willing to put in to make our business succeed with AI?

At the 2024 Gartner Data & Analytics Summit, the consensus was clear: AI and Data are vital for business success. Yet, the intricacies of AI present a formidable challenge. It’s vital in a data-centric culture to ensure all employees can analyze and interpret data effectively. This involves understanding data sources, deriving insights, and applying them in decision-making, forming the basis of a data-literate organization.

3. Promote Data Transparency

Eliminate departmental data hoarding to facilitate collaboration. Ensure data is accessible to all relevant parties, building trust and enhancing decision accuracy.

Implement incentives for data-driven achievements. Celebrate and acknowledge teams and individuals who effectively leverage data.

9. Prioritize Data Communication

Regularly underscore the significance of data in achieving organizational goals. Share success stories to motivate and reinforce the preference for data over intuition or tradition in all business aspects.

10. Develop Data-Savvy Leaders

Train leaders to be advocates of data-driven decision-making. Leaders who prioritize data in their strategies and daily choices set a powerful example for the entire company.

As the year draws to a close, a question echoes from my clients, colleagues, friends, and family: ‘What are the next big trends in Data and AI?’

While I may not possess a crystal ball, my two decades of experience selling Data and Analytics solutions have granted me a glimpse into the future. Nonetheless, it’s crucial to remember that these are merely informed predictions, subject to the ever-changing landscape of technology. Here are five trends I think you should look forward to in 2024.

  1. EASIER and STANDARDIZED access to AI

    2024 is going to be all about Democratized AI. This means that AI will become more accessible and affordable, enabling businesses and individuals of all sizes to harness its power for innovation and growth.

    More and more cloud-based AI platforms and open-source software will be available. Making it easier for all to deploy AI applications without the need for extensive expertise or infrastructure. This democratization will drive the development of smaller yet competent language models (LLMs), becoming the industry standard. The creation of AI models will transform, becoming standardized, outsourced, and specialized! Technology partners like Infocepts will focus on fine-tuning smaller models for specific verticals and use- cases tailored to the needs of individual companies or departments.

    AI for all — That’s the sentiment here!

  2. Welcome ‘Hyper-productive’ HUMANS

    Prepare to witness multi-modal generative AI – systems that deftly harmonize diverse inputs like text, voice, melodies, and visual cues, forging a seamless fusion of creative expressions. AI will redefine the very landscape of the art world. As 2024 approaches, the stage is set for a transformative paradigm shift, where immersive art experiences will captivate the senses and redefine the boundaries of artistic engagement.

  4. Business Transformation with AI 

    Business transformation with AI will get a super boost in 2024, with data coming to decision-makers’ hands with ease and agility. The emphasis remains on establishing a centralized AI platform that bridges silos and fosters collaboration across the organization, prioritizing security and governance.

    AI’s automation capabilities will streamline operations, from mundane tasks to complex processes, freeing human resources for higher-value strategic initiatives!

    AI will lead to the emergence of new job roles and opportunities to learn and grow. With advanced AI tools democratizing data access and insights, data scientists, engineers, and analysts will be empowered to focus on the truly fascinating and creative aspects of their work.

    Trust me, the best time to be in the Data Analytics industry is now!

    I would like to emphasize that as more artificial intelligence enters the world, we must not let go of our emotional intelligence. AI can never replace the unique human ability to connect emotionally with others, to understand the depth of human experiences, or to respond with genuine empathy.

    The book provides a practical approach to communicating data management’s strategic value for an organization using data storytelling, offering strategies to align data management with business goals. The book guides readers in understanding, framing, and effectively communicating the value of data in business contexts​.

    Subhash Kari appreciates Taylor for his unique approach to mastering business data language. He underscores Taylor’s emphasis on establishing data “Truth before Meaning”, prioritizing data quality and master data management before advancing to areas like AI. Kari suggests that Taylor’s insights are crucial for leaders and CFOs to understand the importance of foundational data work and recommends inviting Taylor to speak at your company, especially for advocating funding for data management projects.

  5. “The Algorithmic Leader: How to Be Smart When Machines Are Smarter Than You” by Mike Walsh

    The book presents ten key principles derived from Walsh’s research and interviews with business leaders, AI experts, and data scientists. It aims to equip readers with a transformative mindset and skillset for better decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership in a world increasingly influenced by algorithms and AI technologies.

The book also touches on the societal aspects of AI, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in the responsible development & use of AI technologies.

  8. “Data Science for Business” by Foster Provost and Tom Fawcett

    This book is an insightful guide for applying data science in business contexts. It teaches how to extract meaningful insights from data, emphasizing the importance of data-analytic thinking. It explains various data-mining techniques and uses real-world examples from Provost’s MBA course at New York University. The book also touches on effective strategies to enhance the communication between business stakeholders and data scientists.

    Abhijeet Sarkar, Solution Consultant at Infocepts, commends the book for its effective simplification of data science complexities. He values its instructional approach that avoids overly technical mathematical explanations, making the material accessible and enlightening. Sarkar also appreciates the book’s foundational insights into data science and its strategic guidance on applying data science methods to resolve business challenges.

As a result, organizations must ensure that data acquisition practices align with applicable privacy regulations, such as GDPR in Europe or CCPA in California. Compliance necessitates transparency with users, obtaining appropriate consent, and only using data within the terms of these agreements.

    Effective anonymization techniques can help organizations protect user privacy by stripping data of identifying information, while still using it to inform AI models. Methods such as differential privacy or tokenization can support businesses in maintaining compliance while still benefiting from AI’s potential.

  • Legal Compliance in AI-driven Decision-making

    AI-driven recommendations may have substantial legal ramifications, particularly in specific sectors like finance, healthcare, and employment. Organizations need central AI governance frameworks to oversee models’ compliance with sector-specific regulations and address potential ethical tensions.

In Summary…

The adoption of AI technologies has the potential to unlock enormous societal and economic benefits. However, to maximize these benefits and minimize risks, businesses must work tirelessly to ensure that their AI systems are developed and deployed responsibly.

The compliance component of a responsible AI framework focuses on fair data acquisition practices, obtaining consent, and upholding privacy and regulatory standards. In the rapidly-evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI), we are presented with a variety of promising possibilities and daunting challenges alike. As we herald AI’s potential to transform society, it’s crucial that we address one key issue integral to responsible and ethically designed AI: fairness.

Identifying Bias in Training and Application of AI Recommendations

AI systems learn from data and, in doing so, they often internalize the biases contained within that data. Consequently, such biases can pervasively infiltrate the system’s recommendations and output, making it important to inspect and recognize these biases during the system’s training phase.

For example, consider an AI system designed to predict job suitability. If its training data consists predominantly of CVs from men, the system risks overlooking the competencies of women or non-binary individuals. Here, representation bias distorts the AI’s understanding of ‘job suitability’, leading to skewed and potentially unjust recommendations.

Understanding such injustices requires a measure of statistical literacy, but the broader takeaway transcends mathematics: we must be vigilant against latent prejudices baked into our datasets. Improper understanding and usage of data potentially perpetuate structural inequities, an antithesis to fair and equitable AI practices.

Mitigating Bias and Identifying Residual Risk

Once such biases are identified, the next daunting task is their mitigation. This involves revising the datasets being used, tweaking the mechanisms of the AI system, or adopting novel techniques such as ‘fairness through unawareness’ (where the algorithm is designed oblivious to sensitive attributes), or ‘fairness through accuracy’ (where equal predictive accuracy is maintained for all groups).

Let’s revisit our job recommendation AI. One potential solution is ensuring the training data is balanced regarding gender representation, acknowledging the non-binary candidates as well. Alternatively, the AI could be redesigned to ignore gender information while making its predictions.

Yet even after mitigation strategies are applied, there remains a residual risk. These residual ‘echoes of bias’ are critical, subtle, and often overlooked. There’s no perfect recipe for unbiased AI; all mitigation strategies harbor some risk of passing the remnants of bias into the AI system. Recognizing this residual risk is the crucial first step toward managing it and is key to continually improving our AI systems for fairness.

Advancing Toward Equity

Addressing bias and its residual risk segues to our final consideration: the pursuit of equity. It’s crucial to note that fairness is not synonymous with equity. Fairness seeks to remove biases; equity goes a step further, aiming to correct systemic imbalances.

AI has the potential to advance this goal by giving communities the tools to understand and challenge systemic imbalances. For instance, a transparent AI model that highlights the unequal funding among schools in a district can serve as a powerful tool for demanding educational equity.

However, achieving equity through AI requires us to consider more critical questions. Who is framing the problem? Who is excluded or disadvantaged by the existing system? Addressing these points will enable us to engage AI as an ally in promoting equity while ensuring its use is genuinely fair.

In conclusion, a fairness component is crucial to crafting responsible AI. Identifying and mitigating biases, and understanding residual risks, is integral to this process. However, the pursuit of equity requires us to delve even deeper, asking tough questions and challenging systemic imbalances.

The nascent field of AI Ethics is defining parameters to ensure that AI models are just and equitable. We, as a community of data enthusiasts and professionals, have a critical role in advancing this discourse, in the spirit of asking: how can we break algorithmic norms to shape a more equitable future?
